From a writing prompt book I bought back in January pt. II
Perhaps it was a dream, she thought. Perhaps if she pinched herself, she would wake up. But she didn’t want to wake up. She wanted to stay in this dream world where she loved like this.
She stared at herself in the mirror, a smile forming on her bare lips. Her hair, a perfect crown of soft, thick, coils. She hadn’t bothered braiding it the night before to give it a more curly look. She woke this morning and let be exactly what it wanted to be. She’d slept naked and stood before the mirror the same. She’d seen herself a thousand times, but it had never felt like this. She looked at her body. Some things looked as new as the day she was born and others…others told stories of a life well lived.
She placed a hand on the skin that now covered her empty womb. The year had been a tough one, filled with lessons and sadness. But for everything she may have lost, she’d gained an incredible thing.
This body, she thought.
She touched the parts of her that had stretched and grew and still could not believe how beautiful she was. How full of love.
She touched the skin that covered her now empty womb.
She would never be the same.
